It was a Thursday. I was entertaining the prospect of enrolling in an animation school and the rather frank, though not entirely unpleasant Director stated that while I can on occasion draw and such, I actually have no style. He may have sugar-coated it a bit more than that, but I forget. My mind has no room for extraneous details.</div><div style="text-align: justify; "><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify; ">What he said though was true, I am still an artist very much in search of a style. Actually, I still have trouble considering myself an 'artist', I'm really just someone who likes to doodle in pencil a lot. Doodle. Such an odd word. But in that vein, I had some time spare this evening and decided to try my hand at developing such a thing. Via doodling.</div><div style="text-align: justify; "><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify; ">I took a photograph, <a href="http://imagecache2.allposters.com/images/ENO/PP002.jpg">this one</a>, and did a short 90 min exercise in pencil where I replicated the image a number of times, each time moving further away from a straight realistic representation. It involves robots. And pirates. Need I say more? :-D Anyway, that's what the designs in the last image are for. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">They turned out ok. I think the top right robot is a tad too Futurama influenced, and the bottom 'tank' looks like it was designed by a Japanese toy maker, but what the hey. It's a start! Well, maybe not resurrected. Resurrection would imply that it was living to begin with, which is a bit of a long stretch considering that at its most lively there was very little to distinguish it from something a carrion bird might look upon as lunch. But we're trying again. There's a number of pieces to be going up in the next week or so, including hopefully the first page or two of a new short comic I'm playing around with. Until then, I leave you with the above character sketch from the afore-mentioned short comic. His name is Fil.</div>Mel Cookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02229079055938549342noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2483184143099126239.post-54600335817793514362008-12-21T16:54:00.000-08:002008-12-21T17:09:03.338-08:00<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_DHKZznOJ2c4/SU7nr0AnT0I/AAAAAAAAAAk/P79nR2Qa47o/s1600-h/blizzard.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 170px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_DHKZznOJ2c4/SU7nr0AnT0I/AAAAAAAAAAk/P79nR2Qa47o/s400/blizzard.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5282414152833781570" /></a> <br /><br /><div>It’s another snow day today. Everything has become so blanketed in white that everyday objects are outside floundering around in existential fits having lost all meaning, shape and form. Needless to say I almost joined them when after walking a block-and-a-half in a zigzag pattern I became completely and utterly disorientated. It only made matters worse when the snow-covered fire hydrant I thought was beside me, stood up, shook the snow off it’s coat and happily bounded off in the opposite direction leaving nothing but a trail of yellow snow and paw prints in its wake. </div><div><br /></div><div>I honest-to-god passed people skiing down the road while out taking photos earlier. </div><div><br /></div><div>I have no other explanation for this bizarre turn of events than that I was obviously smoking mushrooms before going to sleep again and woke up embedded in a Lewis Carroll novel. Actually that’s a lie. Or two. The mattress is neither swarthy (it’s mach 2 after the sudden and distressing death of my first) nor is it really all that comforting. Truly, if the dark and swollen circles beneath my eyes are anything to go by, then ’comfort’ is a cluster of curves and angles I really can’t properly associate in any way, shape or form with this lovely plastic prison of stale air. </div><div><br /></div><div>Regardless, I am sitting on it cross-legged… as has been established… and staring at a relatively blank screen.
